The SSIMAs – The Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards
CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE, ARTISTIC VOICE & LEGACY – From Within The Indigenous Community Across Turtle Island
The SSIMAs will present awards representing a variety of music genres as well as awards for cultural contribution, significance, legacy and social voice. The award show itself will be two hours in length including the presentation of awards to the winners, as well as live performances from finalists throughout the evening.
A CELEBRATION OF CANADIAN MUSIC AND LEGACY
The presentation of Indigenous music has been a cornerstone of the Festival for over 22 years including the partnership with the nationally broadcast Indigenous Day Live Concerts in 2017 and 2018. The SSIMAs will be streamed live from the National Arts Centre on June 12th with watch parties planned across the country, showcasing a significant celebration of Indigenous music and legacy.
An event like The SSIMAs is poised to become an integral part of Canada’s cultural presence in years to come and ensures Indigenous music is experienced by an ever-wider audience.
The SSIMAs and the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival are produced by Indigenous entertainment and tourism firm, Indigenous-Experiences.ca, on behalf of the National Indigenous Peoples Day Committee. An Artist Advisory Committee comprising Canadian Indigenous music leaders supports the initiative through strategic and artistic advice and counsel.
“It’s time to celebrate Indigenous voices! These Awards provide an excellent platform for artists
to be recognized for their hard work. Ottawa being the nation’s capital is a great portal to the
world to share the surging wave of Indigenous expression,” noted Advisory Committee
members Vince Fontaine and Elaine Bomberry.
