Helping Our Urban Kwselktn Winter Feast 2020
The Helping Our Urban Kwselktn Winter Feast provides a free meal and a giveaway of toiletry items, warm clothing, and canned or dried traditional food and medicine collected throughout the year to help our Indigenous residents of DTES connect to the land and provide memories of being home.
This event was created in 2015 by Johnny Perry and former Kukpi7 Ryan Day, both of Bonaparte First Nation, to help Secwepemc community members in the DTES. The event is 100% volunteer-driven and donor-funded and it is this generosity that allowed us to serve more than 600 people last year. The response has been overwhelming and the online community continues to grow exponentially–a signal to us that the need to respond with culture, kindness, and gathering to Indigenous residents of the DTES is one felt by Indigenous communities across BC.
This year we will have powwow dancers, as well as traditional drummers and singers. Several Chiefs from Indigenous communities around B.C. will offer an eagle feather brushing to cleanse and bring good energy to our guests. All are welcome to join in this celebration of Indigenous community and culture.
