We Are All Treaty People (Theatre Production)
Created by the Artists of Making Treaty 7
A Co-production between Quest Theatre and the Making Treaty 7 Cultural Society
We Are All Treaty People tells the story a Blackfoot Trickster who bursts in on two young girls, one Indigenous, one non-Indigenous, who what to be friends. He proceeds to pull historical accounts, poetry, songs, prayer and creative story telling out of his knowledge bundle to present to the girls that their path to friendship is virtually impossible. Told with Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists the plays intent is to promote healing and to inspire positive relationships across cultures and generations.
The play was created for young people aged 8 and up, but resonates with many adults. The play provides knowledge, historical information and a wealth of discoveries that provide a context for young people to reflect on current and future relationships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people everywhere.
Paddy Gillard-Bentley the Artistic Director at Flush Ink Productions so very generously told us, after she saw the show at the Impact Festival, “This was a beautiful, poignant, emotional, funny, smart journey that every person living in Canada should experience and know. This play will inspire the audience with hope, and a desire to move forward with change and love.”
Balancing the inequality of the more commonly known colonial history with the lesser known Indigenous history, in an age appropriate way, propels young people towards a cycle of inquiry, deeper knowledge, understanding, empathy and action.
