A little bit about the facilitator:
“My name is Jessie Newman and I am a member of the Xpey’ Wellness team. I would love to share a bit about myself. My mom is Haida from Skidegate and my dad is Heiltsuk and Kwakwaka’wakw from Bella Bella. I grew up in Skidegate on Haida Gwaii, and spent many of my summers in Bella Bella. I have always had a strong love of food, especially seafood. I come from two families of fishermen and was lucky to have access to salmon, prawns, abalone, clams, and more all year round! I turned my love of food into a career when I began to understand the strong link between nutrition and health. A few of my family members had developed diabetes, and weren’t managing well. I thought wouldn’t it be great to support them and support my communities in their wellness journeys? So I applied to Dietetics school at UBC and here I am now working as the Indigenous Health Dietitian at Island Health.”
