Launching its latest book project, N’shaytkin, by Nlaka pamux/Secwepemc artist Chris Bose, battery opera books will host a series of free readings and performances by the author with local artists. Focused at grunt gallery (350 E 2nd Ave) and nearby Boombox (Earl Finning Way), the events will run Wednesday, December 18 – Sunday, December 22.

In Nłeʔkepmxcin — the language of the Nlaka’pamux First Nations — N’shaytkin means “a relation that has passed on, or those that came before us.” Chris Bose’s new novella — incorporating elements of faux-memoir, film script and storyboards as well as historical documents, maps, and pictograms — explores the failure of a mine tailings dam from five perspectives in BC’s interior. Set in and around the remote reserve of Nkemci’n outside Spences Bridge, Bose’s interwoven narratives tackle the impact of colonialism, environmental disaster, and indigenous mythology told with subtle humour and deft introspection.

N’shaytkin’s launch will include readings, traditional storytelling, and live street art:

Wednesday, December 18, 7 pm | Traditional stories told by Bose, grunt gallery Graffiti artist, Kay Gallivan, will response to Bose’s story, and propane campfire reading of N’shaytkin, Boombox

Saturday, December 21, 7 pm | Book launch with music and propane campfire readings, Boombox, followed by Solstice Party, grunt gallery
