Love in the Time of COVID-19: Solidarity and Support for the Elderly

May 29, 2020
Facebooktwittermail

Join Marlene Hale of the Wet’suwet’en Nation and Climate Justice Action McGill (C-JAM) for online Zoom discussions every Friday at 7pmEST(4pmPST) to discuss how we can show solidarity with the elderly during the COVID19 pandemic and beyond. The link will be posted in our Facebook event every Thursday, before the webinar the next day, as well as sent out via email. Contact us if you would like to be added to our email list.

Our solidarity discussions include topics like mutual aid for the elderly hard-hit by the COVID19 pandemic, the climate crisis, Indigenous sovereignty movements, healing through community/medicines/solidarity, discussions about our various communities, and how to support each other, such as those who have been targeted by CN Rail’s recent $270 million SLAPP lawsuit against the supporters of the Wet’suwet’en Nation. However, the discussions vary week by week and build on each other.

COVID19 has showcased our society’s failure to support our elders. Elderly people are much more vulnerable to fatal complications, and nursing homes have been some of the hardest-hit locations in the pandemic. But colonial institutions began their assault on elders long before this pandemic by devaluing what elders (amongst others) bring to society by labelling them “unproductive,” in addition to fostering individualism and isolation amongst everyone, the impacts of which elders are particularly vulnerable to. As we all come together to fight this pandemic together, we must ensure that our elderly are not left behind.

Join us for this virtual discussion on supporting the elderly: why their role as knowledge-keepers in Indigenous cultures makes this especially important, and how we can come together, show solidarity, and act for our elders in various communities in this time of need. By engaging in mutual aid, we can overcome the internalized feelings of collective helplessness.
