Finding Critical Mass
If art reflects the heart and soul of a culture, what does it mean for Algonquins in Ontario to lack a basic foundation of images, of artifacts, of… history? It’s a virtual void. It’s like we don’t even exist. Except for the odd stone axe or arrowhead, very few Algonquin artifacts remain.
We have effectively been erased (both intentionally and un-intentionally) by early first contact and the subsequent rapid decline of Algonquin populations due to disease, war, forced assimilation, and the theft and colonization/destruction of our traditional lands. Unless we cultivate contemporary Algonquin artists and exhibit their work, future Ontario Algonquin people will look into the mirror and see nothing.
